Boating regulation · Tenerife
Do you need a licence to rent a boat in Tenerife?
Until 30 September 2026, no. You can rent a boat and skipper it yourself without a nautical licence.
From 1 October 2026, yes. Skippering a rental boat yourself will require a licence. It is a national change and applies across Spain.
What does not change
The change is about who is at the helm, not about going out to sea. These still require no licence from the customer:
- Private charter, because a skipper comes on board.
- Jet ski safaris, because they are guided by an instructor.
In both cases you enjoy the day and we take care of the helm.
Your options from 1 October
- With a skipper. No paperwork, from day one.
- With your own licence. If you already hold one, nothing changes for you.
- By getting the licence. We are preparing a course in Los Gigantes. Dates and price are not published yet: there is a waiting list so we can let you know as soon as places open.
Where we operate
AD Boat Rental operates from Los Gigantes, in south-west Tenerife: self-drive boats, skippered private charters and guided jet ski safaris. Durations and day-by-day availability are on the fleet page.
